Speech by Fo-Ching Lu, SYL Foundation President, from LLCS’s Winter Gala on December 11, 2011

Vancouver, BC - Greetings to Master Lian Tzi, True Budha School (TBS) dharma brothers and sisters and special guests. I am honored to be here today to accept Lotus Light Charity Society (LLCS) and PTT Buddhist Society’s contribution to Sheng-Yen Lu Foundation. The Foundation is truly grateful to be able to rely on the support of LLCS and the True Buddha School community in advancing its mission of promoting quality health care and education for all.

SYL Foundation has been in existence for three years. In that time, we have distributed well over $600,000 dollars in grants to fund innovative health and education programs, scholarships and disaster relief aid. These funds have helped thousands of people, often in a time of great need, receive lifesaving help and tools to live a better life. I am proud to say the work we do is all through volunteers, and most of all, I am touched by the giving hearts of all you Foundation donors. Without your support, we would not be able to reach so many people in need.

When the earthquake struck Haiti last year, the True Buddha School community raised over $116,000 dollars to help with the recovery. Together with LLCS, SYL Foundation shipped emergency relief supplies and 20,000 pounds of rice directly over to more than 300 earthquake victims. 100% of the disaster relief funds are now being used to help build a state-of-the-art teaching hospital in Mirebalais, Haiti, which will not only address immediate healthcare needs of the local population, but improve the healthcare system of the entire country. I will be personally visiting the hospital next year to oversee the progress.

As SYL Foundation continues to grow, I look forward to a long and sustaining partnership with LLCS and the global TBS community. Together, we can channel our combined power and resources to improve countless lives all over the world.

I wish you all a healthy and happy holiday season!

Amitabha. I would like to extend my greeting as well to all who are participating this evening by webcast, including the many thousands who are listening to us right now, in Taiwan, and all around the world who are participating in this event by webcast. Truly, technology is a wonderful thing, that they could do that.

When I was a young boy, I lived in Bangkok, Thailand. Shortly after we arrived there, I began to see the Buddhist monks and the apprentices who would wear the saffron robes and would go out each day to ask for their meals. My parents explained to me that this symbolized great humility and also that it provided an opportunity for the community to provide support.

I was so impressed by these young men with their shaved heads who would go out every day, and who were spending a period of time, learning the Buddhist faith, achieving self realization as best they could, contributing to the community and helping to make the world a more peaceful and loving place. I have been a deep admirer of all who followed the Buddhist tradition ever since that experience as a young boy, because of its faith and its dedication to the principles of compassion, of love, of peace, and of service to others. We are so fortunate to have this beautiful temple in our state, and in our entire world by Grandmaster Lu, the founder. Thank you.

We are very fortunate that the [Sheng-Yen Lu] Foundation has been established here since fall 2008, and has given more than 600 thousand dollars in grants to local organizations and to provide relief in Haiti and in other areas of great need. And I know that money is the result of the generosity of all of you, and of the other five million disciples of the Grandmaster who are giving of themselves and contributing to the Foundation in order to lessen the suffering of others. That makes me very, very proud and humble, to know that I am in the presence of such tremendous generosity and compassion. Thank you to all of you, and thank you to the Grandmaster for that.

Benn, Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at McMaster University, detailed each student’s utilization of Lotus scholarship funds and expressed true appreciation of the support received. The following is a summary.

Stephanie Balkwill is a PhD student interested in the institutionalization of Chinese Buddhism during the 4th to 7th centuries. The Lotus Scholarship funds allowed Stephanie to visit many early religious sites and sacred mountains that were integral to the development of Chinese religion, including Buddhist caves at Longmen, temples in Xian and Chengdu, Hua Shan and the Southern Marchmount, Nanyue.

Jessica Fish is an undergraduate student interested in pursuing Buddhist Studies, specifically Indian Buddhism. The Lotus Scholarship funded her participation in an intensive summer language course in Sanskrit at Harvard University where she learned about the etymological, cultural and historical significance of countless Sanskrit words.

Daniel Friedrich is a PhD student focused on Buddhism in Japan. The Lotus Scholarship funded his visit to Hokkaido, Japan, to identify important sites for ethnographic research that will form the basis of his doctoral thesis. Daniel hopes contribute to greater understanding and appreciation of local social, historical, and geographical factors in contemporary Jodo Shinshu life.

Chris Jensen is a PhD student studying Chinese Buddhism. The Lotus Scholarship funds allowed him to participate in WoodenFish’s Buddhism in China tour, which included numerous historical Buddhist sites throughout Sichuan and Chongqing. Interacting with worshippers and religious professionals, seeing China’s most sacred architecture and artifacts was a profound experience for Chris.

Adrian Chih-mien Tseng is a PhD student pursuing a study of Chinese Buddhism. The Lotus Scholarship funded her attendance and participation in the XVIth Congress of IABS (International Association of Buddhist Studies) at Dharma Drum Buddhist College in Taipei, Taiwan. Adrian presented a paper at the Congress, which is part of her PhD dissertation primarily addressing how the concept of Buddha-nature was reinterpreted in Chinese Buddhism.
