Each year, SYL Foundation will dedicate a portion of its annual funding towards special projects.  Currently, we do not accept unsolicited proposals or letters of inquiry for special projects funding.

2015 special project:

Nepal Earthquake

On April 25, 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated Nepal.   SYL Foundation will be collecting funds to aid in the recovery efforts. Please indicate “Nepal Earthquake” on your donation if you wish to support this cause.  100% of your donation will go towards rebuilding the lives of those affected by the disaster.

2014 special project:

Typhoon Haiyan, Philippines

On November 8, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan (a.k.a. Yolanda) devastated the Philippines with its powerful winds and deadly storm conditions.   SYL Foundation will be collecting funds throughout the year to aid in the recovery efforts particularly in hard to reach areas affected by the Typhoon.  Please indicate “Philippines Disaster Relief” on your donation if you wish to support this cause.  100% of your donation will go towards rebuilding the lives of those affected by the disaster.

2011 special project:

Japan Disaster Relief

After the earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan on March 11, 2011, Sheng-Yen Lu Foundation immediately donated $50,000 USD to the Red Cross to assist with emergency relief efforts there.  We will continue to raise funds throughout the year to assist Japan in the long road to recovery.  Please indicate “Japan Disaster Relief” on your donation if you wish to support this cause.  100% of your donation will go towards assisting victims of the disaster.

2010 special projects:

1.  Lotus Scholarship Fund

In partnership with True Buddha Foundation, Sheng-Yen Lu Foundation established the Lotus Scholarship Fund to support students in the study of all Buddhist traditions.  We welcomed applications from individuals as well as educational institutions that provide Buddhist studies programs.  UPDATE: The Lotus Scholarship program has been relaunched with a focus on helping immigrant and refugee students in pursuit of post-secondary education.  Details here.

2.  Haiti Relief Fund

Millions of people are suffering from the deadly earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010.  The Foundation has raised funds which will be directed to not only immediate relief aid, but to the long term recovery effort of rebuilding hospitals and schools.  The Foundation has also partnered with Lotus Light Charity Society (Vancouver) in donating twenty thousand pounds  (20,000) of rice to earthquake victims.

2009 Special Project:

Disaster relief funding in the wake of typhoon Morakot which devastated Southern Taiwan on  August 8, 2009

Living Buddha Lian Sheng donates to Typhoon Morakot Relief Fund

The Foundation raised nearly $47,000 USD for disaster relief aid.  A total of $30,000 USD was directed to the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office  (TECO) at “Care 88,” a benefit event on August 29, 2009 hosted by AAT Television.  The remaining funds were directed to Lotus Light Society of Taiwan,  an organization that provided over 6,000 meals per day to flood victims.  Please see http://tbworld.org/h2e.html.
