Lotus Scholarship

SYL Foundation is committed to creating opportunity and access to higher education.  The Foundation’s Lotus Scholarship Program provides assistance to recently immigrated students in Washington’s King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. The purpose of the scholarship program is to give financial support to immigrant and refugee students who are pursuing post-secondary education, regardless of the students’ immigration status.

Scholarship Amount   $1500/year (renewable for up to 4 years)

Eligibility

  • Student attends high school in King, Pierce or Snohomish county and is due to graduate in June 2018
  • Immigrated to the United States during high school or after June 15, 2014
  • Plans to attend a community college, university, technical or trade school
  • Enrolled in ESL/ELL classes during high school
  • Participated or enrolled in a college readiness program (sample programs here)
  • Continues to participate and/or enroll in college persistence or support programs in college
  • Available for an in person or virtual (e.g. Skype) interview in April 2018

Timeline

  • Completed applications must be submitted no later than March 15, 2018.
  • Candidates will be scheduled for an interview in April 2018.
  • Candidates will be notified about the decisions by late May 2018.
  • Renewal applications for returning applicants are due July 15, 2018.

Application Process for New Applicants

  1. Gather all materials you will be required to upload as part of the application:
    • School transcript that shows classes taken and grades.
    • Demonstration of financial need through one of the following documents: FAFSA Student Aid Report; Family Income Tax Return; W-2; or DSHS Benefits Letter.
  2. Request a Letter of Recommendation from a college prep teacher or advisor and provide their email in your application. They will be sent a separate link to complete the recommendation online. PLEASE NOTE: You are responsible for insuring that your recommendation is submitted by March 15th. Please check with your teacher or advisor prior to the due date.
  3. Complete and submit an online application found here (link will be available shortly) by March 15th. You will be able to save your work and return to it later to complete the application.

Renewal Application Process for Returning Applicants:

  1. Gather all materials you will be required to upload as part of the application:
    • School transcript that shows college classes taken and grades.
  2. Request a Letter of Recommendation from a teacher, college persistence advisor, advocate, or school counselor and provide their email in your application. They will be sent a separate link to complete the recommendation online. PLEASE NOTE: You are responsible for insuring that your recommendation is submitted by July 15th. Please check with your recommender prior to the due date.
  3. Complete and submit an online application found here (link will be available shortly) by July 15th. You will be able to save your work and return to it later to complete the application.
